How Much Does a Dental Implant Cost? Is It Worth It?

At Toothsome, we have a Specialist Periodontist Dr Patty Chou who has been placing dental implants for more than 17 years. Dr Chou prefers Straumann Roxolid SLactive dental implants as they have the evidence and history to support their long term success. As a Specialist using our preferred Swiss Straumann dental implant, you would be forgiven for thinking that our fees are more expensive than your dentist.

However, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that our fees are usually less than your dentist. The reason for this is our practice is limited to gum treatments, dental implants and wisdom teeth, As such, our experience, processes and efficiencies allow us to provide the highest level of health care in a cost-effective manner.

A fully restored single dental implant in Sydney can vary in price considerably. A simple search will reveal what prices dentists are charging in Sydney. However, there is more to consider than just the cost of the implant and implant surgery. Factors include the surgeon’s experience, need for tooth removal, need for a bone or soft tissue graft, sinus lifting, the type and number of dental implants.

At Toothsome, our surgical fee is usually the same or sometimes lower than most dentists. There is usually no or very little out-of-pocket expense for the CT scan and we prefer placing Straumann Roxolid SLActive dental implants.

Dental implants are one of the fastest-growing dental procedures globally. There are many advantages to choosing dental implants over other options for missing teeth. Dental Implants not only help to fill any gaps, but they also help to protect the existing adjacent teeth. They can also protect your jaw’s bone structure, and once in place, they function just like normal teeth.

The total cost of dental implants is affected by several factors, including the number of implants required, the location of the implant, the need for any extractions prior to the implant, and the density of the bone where the implant will be placed,  In some instances, if there isn’t enough bone height or width, you may require more preparatory work such as bone grafts.

More and more patients are choosing dental implants as their solution for replacing missing teeth for a host of reasons, including their reported success rate of 98%.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

The primary reason patients choose dental implants over dentures and a dental bridge is that a dental implant functions just like a natural tooth. Unlike traditional dentures or a dental bridge, implants have the normal chewing power of natural teeth. You can also brush and floss your dental implants like you would your natural teeth.

Additionally, unlike dentures and a dental bridge, dental implants help maintain bone integrity in your jaw. Your jawbone needs pressure from chewing and biting to stay strong and dense. Over time, tooth loss leads to bone loss, and dentures and a dental bridge don’t provide stimulation to maintain your jawbone’s volume.

A single dental implant can also help protect the surrounding teeth by preserving the jawbone and prevent the other teeth from shifting. Shifting teeth and empty spaces between teeth promote plaque and bacteria development, which can lead to tooth decay of the surrounding teeth.

The Process

Here at Toothsome Periodontics, Implants & Oral Surgery in Sydney, we have a four-step process when it comes to dental implants. The entire process is explained at the initial consultation and in writing with all the appointments, procedures and costs outlined.

Initial Consultation

At your initial consultation, we examine your teeth and gums and develop a plan of treatment. This exam will include X-rays or a CT scan, and an assessment of any restorative work that needs to be completed. If you need bone grafting, sinus lifting or a tooth removed, these procedures will also be discussed with you.

Once we have all the necessary information to perform the implant surgery, we will provide you with a detailed treatment plan outlining the steps and associated costs. When you are ready, we can schedule your surgery date.

Implant Surgery

Our experienced Specialist Periodontist and Dental Surgeon at Toothsome will place the implant into your jawbone. Because it is a very precise procedure and all the planning is done beforehand, it is a relatively quick procedure. It is also pain-free under local anaesthetic. A healing cap or healing abutment is placed onto the implant. A healing cap is buried under the gums whilst a healing abutment will poke through your gums.

Healing

After the implant is placed, it takes time for your jawbone to grow onto the implant. This is called osseointegration and this can take 6-12 weeks. At Toothsome, we use Straumann SLActive Roxolid dental implants. However, if your dentist prefers another implant system, we are familiar with most dental implant companies. The Straumann Roxolid SLActive implant design, material and surface coating provides optimum conditions for bone growth.

Collar and Abutment

After your gum tissue has healed, and your bone has fused onto the implant, you will return to Toothsome to have the healing abutment placed on the implant to separate the gum tissue from the implant. This abutment is sometimes placed at the sametime as the dental implant.

When this is placed, you will see a metal coloured cap poking through your gums. This abutment allows the gums to heal properly around the neck of the implant crown.

Restoration

Your final visit will be to have your permanent crown attached to the abutment. This is usually done by your dentist. If you don’t have a dentist, we can help you at Toothsome. Once it is installed, you can eat, drink, and brush your teeth normally. With proper oral hygiene, your dental implants can last a lifetime, although you may eventually have to replace the crown due to wear and tear.
