Brushing twice a day keeps heart disease away

Chronic infections of the tooth-supporting tissues (periodontal disease) can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Periodontal disease elevates the inflammatory status of the body and this increases the individual’s risk of cardiovascular disease, such as atherosclerosis.

The recent Scottish Health Survey concluded that individuals with poor tooth brushing techniques have a raised level of inflammation and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. This valuable information emphasises that good oral hygiene not only promotes good oral health but also promotes good general health.

Your dental health professional may refer you to a periodontist for the management of periodontal disease. A periodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infections of the tooth-supporting tissues.
