Dr. Patty Chou, Dr. Rohan Rodricks

Periodontal Maintenance, Therapy and Surgery

Dr. Patty Chou, our Specialist Periodontist and dental implant expert in Sydney, is well versed in all aspects of periodontal (gum) procedures including advanced gum disease management. Her gentle but assured style and friendly approachable persona puts patients at ease. She can help with the following conditions:

Problems with gum disease and bad breath through periodontal (gum) therapy - This involves cleaning the tooth surfaces above the gum line and the root surfaces below. This is done with minimum discomfort and an expert hand, using specialised instruments.

Severe periodontal infection or deep periodontal pockets – Sometimes a periodontal infection may be too far gone for it to be treated with gum cleaning/therapy alone. In these instances, Dr Chou may suggest a surgical procedure known as a gum flap surgery. The gum is retracted, a deep clean of the root area is carried out and the gum is reattached. Surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic, or if our patients prefer, under general anaesthetic.

Gum recession (Shrunken or receded gums) caused by periodontal disease or over brushing the gums can be treated by a gum grafting procedure - Gum grafting is performed to restore gums when it’s been lost through periodontal disease, overly aggressive brushing or with tooth movement outside the jawbone.

Excessive gums or short teeth needing fillings or crowns can be treated by a gum lifting procedure - Gum lifting (also known as a crown lengthening procedure) is a gentle surgical process designed to expose more of the tooth. This helps correct problems like a gummy smile or uneven gum shaping or allows your dentist to place a deep filling or crown. Dr Chou specialises in both processes and has streamlined procedures so that the gum lift cost in Sydney, or the gum graft cost in Sydney is competitively priced.

Regular periodontal maintenance therapy - Once gum disease has been managed, either through deep cleaning or periodontal surgery, Dr Chou will sit down with you and discuss a regular maintenance program. This will include regular examinations and full cleaning to keep you in the very best of oral health. She’ll also take time to talk to you about what you should be doing at home to help you eradicate any associated risk factors.

Surgical regeneration treatments – Missing, damaged or poor-quality bone and bone tissue can be replaced using techniques such as guided bone regeneration, block bone grafting and guided tissue regeneration. While periodontal disease can destroy tooth-supporting tissue, did you know that when a tooth is missing or extracted it can kick-start a bone resorption process?

Dr. Chou, our Specialist Periodontist in Sydney, skilfully uses the advanced grafting techniques to replace missing bone using either your own bone taken from another part of your jaw, Geistlich Bio-Oss Bone Substitute, or state-of-the-art bioactive gels designed to stimulate growth in existing bone. Either way, once new or regenerated bone is available, it enables Dr. Chou to place the dental implants securely in the most ideal position. In the case of severe periodontal disease, Dr. Chou may be able to restore lost bone and the periodontal ligament to protect an existing tooth.

Oral surgery

Dr. David Willis

Oral Surgery & Wisdom Teeth Removal

Being both a Medical Practitioner and a highly experienced Dental Surgeon, Dr Willis takes a holistic view to oral surgery. In addition to expertly treating conditions like impacted wisdom teeth, he also pays particular attention to a patient’s overall health and wellbeing, during and after the event. Conditions he can help with include:

Impacted and simple wisdom teeth removal through to complicated expert wisdom teeth removal near the nerve - Sydney patients should know that wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure which can be carried out under intravenous (conscious) sedation, or under general anaesthetic at our local Chatswood hospital, or Macquarie Street Day Surgery.

Fractured, broken, or decayed teeth through to quick and easy tooth extraction – This includes teeth that have a poor prognosis because of gum disease or nerve/tooth infection.

Removal of excessive gum tissue or smoothing out uneven ridges of the jawbone using pre prosthetic surgery - This is a minor surgery used to reshape or smooth the jawbone or to eradicate excessive gum tissue. It can be used to improve the appearance of the gums or to prepare the jaw for full or partial dentures.

Removal of the frenulum to close gaps between teeth or prevent cleaning and flossing problems – A frenectomy is usually carried out when the frenulum (a small band of tissue that connects the cheeks, lips and tongue, to the jawbone) prevents your orthodontist from closing a gap between your teeth. A frenulum may also inhibit the ability to brush and floss correctly. Dr Willis can remove the frenulum under local or general anaesthetic.

Preventing bone loss after tooth removal with a ridge preservation – This is a common procedure carried out when a tooth is removed. Bone graft material is placed into the bone to prevent bone loss, normally prior to dental implants. Sydney NSW patients should know that this is a comfortable procedure performed under local anaesthetic.

Non-exposed adult teeth - Sometimes patients will experience a condition where an adult tooth or teeth hasn’t grown through. Dr Willis will carefully expose the tooth during a surgical tooth exposure. This is often done before orthodontic procedures so that the tooth is moved to the correct position by your orthodontist.

Dental Implant placement and maintenance

While Dr Patty Chou is our Specialist Periodontist and expert in dental implants, Dr David Willis, in addition to wisdom teeth removal in Sydney, is also an expert Dental Surgeon. So here at Toothsome in Sydney, our dental implant treatments use the latest techniques and technology including computer-guided flapless surgery carried out by industry experts. We also frequently perform extensive full mouth dental implant cases (6-12 implants) and sinus lifting dental implant cases that may be beyond the scope of other dental practitioners. Because Dr Chou and Dr Willis work together to deliver the best outcome for the patient, many of the processes are streamlined which means first-class treatment done efficiently, and at affordable prices.

Dental Implant surgery and guided implant surgery

At Toothsome, here at our dental implant centre in Sydney, we’re proud to offer both conventional dental implant surgery and the very latest computer-guided techniques using top industry implant brands like Straumann Roxolid SLActive.

In many cases, treatments are more efficient, with less surgery time and a more predictable recovery.

We can assist with a wide number of implant-based restorations including:

● Immediate teeth replacement
● Full mouth cases (bridges supported by 4 or 6 implants)
● Implant-retained removable dentures
● Dental implants in difficult regions where jawbone is minimal, or teeth are aesthetically demanding
● Dental implants requiring bone grafting or sinus lifting

So if you want to find out more about how our Toothsome dental implant centre here in Sydney can help you restore your smile, then contact us for a consultation (02) 9159 3728

Peri-implantitis treatments

In addition to placing dental implants, we also carry out dental implant treatments for problems such as peri-implantitis. Unfortunately dental implants can be susceptible to infection and inflammation of the soft and hard tissues supporting the implant. If left untreated it can cause the implant to become infected and difficult to keep clean. In these cases we’ll treat the problem implant by removing any infected tissue and cleaning the implant surface.

So, whether you feel you need periodontal treatment, dental implants or wisdom teeth removal, Sydney residents may be asking why choose us?

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Why Toothsome?

We’re Focused and Affordable

You may be forgiven for thinking that practices like ours offering wisdom tooth removal, periodontal treatments and dental implants are expensive compared to other dental clinics. That’s really not the case here….

Because we focus on 3 key areas of dentistry where every aspect is carried out ‘in house’ we’ve streamlined many of these processes, not only making it more efficient for you, but more affordable too.

In addition, and aside from running regular promotions such as a free wisdom tooth assessment, we have admitting rights to some of the best accredited hospitals in Sydney NSW. This is where patients can have their procedure done under general anaesthetic if they choose. Because we’re affiliated with these hospitals, we’ve negotiated some extremely competitive rates for hospitals in Australia, so patients can save money!

What’s more, if you do choose either general or IV (Twilight) sedation it will be carried out under the guidance of Specialist Anaesthetists, meaning our patients get the best healthcare and pay less for this too.

We Take Time to Understand Your Requirements

When you visit either our Chatswood or Baulkham Hills dental clinics you’ll notice right from the start that you’re more than just a patient. Instead, we really get to know you to ensure that we have your needs and requirements covered. This is why we offer in depth (30-60 minute) consultations for every new patient. This ensures that:

● You’re entirely happy with the treatment and
● Any questions or concerns you do have can be answered.

If after this point you’re still unsure about any aspect of your treatment, then we’ll schedule another complimentary consultation.

We’re Genuine Experts in the Services We Offer

Here at Toothsome in NSW, we really are experts in what we do. So, while many dentists in Sydney perform wisdom teeth removal, isn’t it better to seek the expertise of a dental surgeon who spends most of the week removing wisdom teeth? Also, many dentists don’t have access to hospitals in Sydney so they are unable to remove wisdom teeth for you asleep under general anaesthetic. Likewise, most dentists offer periodontal treatments, but a Specialist Periodontist in Sydney has trained a further 3 years in gum and dental implant treatments and only offers periodontal treatments and dental implants. What about dental implants? A Specialist Periodontist has the training and experience to take on most dental implant cases and many dentists refer their complex dental implant cases to a Periodontist.

Our Patient Aftercare is Second to None

Sydney patients will notice that we place huge emphasis on patient aftercare. While we’re confident in the treatment we provide, we know it’s only one aspect. With this in mind, 24 hours after treatment Dr Willis or Dr Chou or Dr Rodricks will call you to see how you’re doing. In addition our patients have 24/7 access to us during their recovery period. Should you have any questions or concerns, then feel free to call. Finally, we’ll also give you a complimentary patient review 1-2 weeks after dental treatment to ensure that everything is to your satisfaction and that you’re progressing well.

In essence our mission is to deliver great periodontal, dental implant and wisdom teeth removal care to all our patients, and we always strive to do exactly that!

If you need wisdom teeth removal in Sydney, dental implants or gum disease treatment, then come and visit Dr Chou and Dr Willis and Dr Rodricks at Toothsome. Book a consultation and let us show you what we can do. Remember you don’t need a referral so call today on (02) 9159 3728
